How to create a Prescription (“Regular Fill”)

  1. From the patient record, click on the New Rx button. This will load the New Prescription Form.





  1. Select the product you wish to prescribe. Users can either select items from the product setup or can type in the drug name, if not in the list (Typically for external script). This is also where the user would indicate if this is an external script. If there are is drug information available, from the product setup, it will be visible in a rollover info dot. Also if there are any know alerts there will be a cation indicator displayed as well with a rollover with details.

  1. Dosing Calculator is available to help dosing levels and capture other information like weight and diagnosis being treated. The system will prompt for weight to be updated if not populated or if approximate (system option).

  1. Instruction and total Quantity are required to be filled out. If the drug was selected from VetView products, then an estimated price for the total quantity will be displayed, along with the ability to check the current inventory quantity in the selected pharmacy inventory.


There is also 2 sections to help quickly creating instructions. Pre-Made standard instructions by product setup or the drafting tool.

  1. Refills and Withdrawals are available to be set and will be defaulted by drug class and product definition. Prescription expiration and Refill expiration will be presented and defaulted. These dates can be shortened, but not extended.

  1. Comments and Patient Status are optional information that help communicate to the pharmacy priority and additional information when fill the prescription.

  1. Once the prescription has been prepared, it can be saved by the student for review with the clinician, or reviewed immediately over the shoulder of the student. Click "Add Script" to save the prescription in a Requested status to the patient record. Multiple prescriptions can be created and stored from the form without returning to the patient record. These may then be reviewed all at once by the supervisor, or saved until the supervisor can review them from a different system.





  1. Prescribing DVM will default to the attending DVM. A notice can be sent to the prescribing DVM for all scripts together by clicking "Send Approval Pending Notice" Or a user with approving privileges can select their username and password. If the approver is DVM then they will become the prescribing DVM automatically. If the Approver is a Non-DVM Approver (Typically a Pharmacist) then the prescribing DVM will remain as selected.


  1. Approved Scripts. Once the prescription has been approved ("Approved" status) no further changes can be made from the clinical side, that is the hand off process to the pharmacy unit, and any changes will need to be made from the pharmacy fill forms.
