What is a Patient Profile in VetView?

Patient Profiles allow you to pre-order a prescription from the CDM, allow you to look up the patient and find the product that was ordered.  This allows you to take controlled substances out in limited quantities, and appropriately track the usage of the products on a MAR.

Patient Profiles are only available if the Pharmacy selected has CDM Orders turned on.  If you do not see the option on a prescription, then check with your pharmacy administrator to see what options are available in your hospital instead.

How do I send a Patient Profile to a controlled drug machine?

  1. Start a new prescription.  Select the options for In-Hospital Use, select a pharmacy, and then select CDM Order (Patient Profile.)

Select In Hospital Use and CDM Order from the top of the prescription window
  2. The options that are available for the prescription will change once you selected CDM Order. Choose the product that you want from the CDM using the Drug field. Enter in the Line and Sequence number, or manually search in the description box.

Choose the drug and instructions and add in quantities.
  3. Enter in the following information:

    1. Dose Quantity This is how much the patient will get each time it is administered.

    2. Occurrences This is the number of times the Dose Quantity will be administered for this prescription.

  4. The system will use these to automatically calculate the Total Quantity.    Frequency of dosage should be written in the instructions by the student or DVM.  Depending on the settings for your specific brand of CDM, the total quantity will be enforced, but the frequency will not.  Products returned to the CDM against this patient profile should add back to the total quantity available, but products that were lost or wasted will count against it.

  5. Fill out the rest of the prescription, and Request and Approve as normal.  VetView will send the Patient Profile to the CDM, where it will be available to dispense against.  Please see your hospital administrator for the specifics of each CDM (Cubex, Pyxis, Omnicell) as the user interface for each machine is different.

  6. MARs will need to be filled out against the prescription once it has been dispensed on the patient record.
