Test Email and HL7 Messaging

Test Email and HL7 Messaging

The purpose of the Test Email and HL7 Messaging job is to confirm the connections between your VetView server and any of the other connected devices that use HL7 or email using incoming and outgoing ports.

Job Settings

The basic job settings for the Test Email and HL7 job are similar to other VetView jobs.

DescriptionField
Active FlagThis job is turned on and active.  Tests are available to run.  If this flag is turned off and the job settings Saved, the job will disappear from the API job status screen and return to the Add Jobs menu.
Server to Run OnWhich of the currently connected servers that this job should run on.  If there are two connected servers with the same name, the job will not run.  VetView recommends having a dedicated Tomcat server installation to run API jobs on, separated from your client facing production servers.
Auto StartThis job will automatically start when the server starts.
Error to Email AddressIf this job fails to run or has an error in execution, this is the email address where any errors will go.

Port Settings

For the purpose of your test email, enter in the port settings for the local server and click Open Port.  This will allow VetView to listen for incoming emails.

Once you have finished your testing, click on Close Port to close the connection.

Port Settings in Other Jobs

Certain other jobs can be set to the same outgoing IP address and port as the incoming IP address and port on this Test Job.

This means that the two API jobs will talk to each other via this Test Job, allowing simulated communications between the external interfaces.  You will need to manually inject any HL7 messages in the appropriate table of the database once the ports are open and the jobs started to verify that the messages are flowing and the HL7 is configured correctly.

Ensure that the outgoing port for each of the test jobs is different, if you will be testing more than one at the same time.

Test Email

You can send a test email in VetView from the server to a specific user account.  If successful, the email will go to the To address.  If not successful, an error will appear in the Message Log.

Send Test HL7 Message

This section allows you to paste in a test HL7 message to confirm that the intended recipient (usually an external device) can receive it from VetView.

Response

If the message sent via the Test HL7 function was successful, you will get a valid HL7 acknowledgement message in the Response.  If the external interface could not interpret your HL7 message, you will get an error in the response informing you of the problem.

Message Log

This section displays all of the HL7 test messages that were sent and received.  Click on the Filter button to search for all messages, or enter in a date range to narrow it down.

Message Details

Click on a row to see the details about the test message that was sent and the acknowledgement response from the external interface.
