Using the Patient Census

Using the Patient Census
Access to the Patient Census is controlled by a single privilege that can be added to any user role. All features on this page are included within that privilege.
The census is intended to be used as a daily means of verifying patient locations within each ward, and can also be used to post board charges associated with your unit against the open episode for each patient.
To access the Patient Census, go to Navigation > Accounting Screens > Patient Census. (If this option is missing, you do not have the Patient Census privilege.)
Find a specific patient's location
If you only want to find the location of a single patient, you can search by the patient's case number.
Click search.
If the patient has a location associated with a current episode, it will appear on the census list.
Add patients to the census
If you are not able to find a patient on the census, but you are aware that the patient is in a census location and should be included, you can manually add the patient to the census.
Find the patient, select the episode, and choose the unit and the specific location for the patient.
A list of charges that will be billed to the patient each day (or hour depending on settings) will appear on this page.
For a situation where a patient will require additional board charges, you can add the product to the patient from this page as well.
These board charges will only be applied to this patient or the duration of this episode. Upon discharge, the custom board charges will reset back to defaults for the next patient.
Create and Print a list of all patients in a unit
To use the census page as a working checklist, you can find all the patients in a specific list, and print out a list.
Search for the unit and location, and when the results have appeared, click on Print Census.
A PDF report will load. The report below is the basic template provided by VetView, but you can customize this report using Jaspersoft to match your hospital's specific requirements.
This PDF is standard and can be printed out to any local or network printer available to the computer.
Updating Patient Information
If information about a patient is incorrect (e.g. the location is wrong, or the patient has since been discharged) you can manually edit the patients from the census page.
Click on the pencil icon, and then choose a new location.
Details regarding the patient appear at the bottom of the census screen. This includes the current open episode and current open order.
You can remove discharged patients from the census from this section of the screen.
Removing a patient from the census will ensure that the board charges for the patient will not be posted the next time the automated census charges are run.
Post Board Charges
If the auto-post board is enabled on the API, then board charges will be applied automatically.
If auto-post is turned off, you can manually apply charges. Only patients who are in a location with charges associated with it, or who have had charges added, will post board.
Select the patients for whom you wish to add charges, and then click on Post Board.
