Quick Accession Creation App - Overview

Quick Accession Creation App

This app was created to help the UGA Diagnostic Lab improve efficiency when creating accessions.  Since the majority of accessions handled at the lab are for a only a small number of species and tests, this app was built to allow them to create these accessions on a tablet with only a few buttons, and then send the accession information to another user for further data entry.  Rapid accession creation will facilitate processing large batches of specimens

Analysis

The initial idea for this quick app came from analysis of the species, specimens, and tests that the Diagnostic Lab has historically performed.  With the majority of tests coming from only four species, six specimens, and nine tests, it was fairly easy to create a single page that would perform the following in the VetView database:

  • Assign species, specimen, and test
  • Create the accession
  • Create accession and specimen labels

Layout

No client or billing data is necessary for this initial step.   The screen accommodates other species, other specimens, and other tests when necessary.

The species, specimen, and test buttons can be selected one at a time.  For even faster data creation, when a test is locked to a species and specimen, the test can be selected and the other two are always selected (e.g. a Coggins test will always be Equine + Serum.)

This screen does not use any right click menus.

A Label printer should be connected to allow for the Accession and Specimen labels to be printed and applied.

The screen uses Reactive Resizing and is supported on all major browsers.

Development

This web app took the VetView team approximately one week to create to a beta state for the Diagnostic Lab to test.  Because the web app is separate from the main VetView app, the WAR files can be manually deployed in a few minutes to allow for fast prototyping and feedback.

This app is open source and all the components are available on the VetView Bitbucket.  (Contact VetView if you are a paying client and do not have access to our Bitbucket downloads.)

The app utilizes the VetView API and authentication tokens to communicate with the main VetView application installed locally on the same server or a different one.  It is built using the ZK framework, like the rest of VetView.

The app uses Groovy/Grails composers throughout.
