How do I create a prescription to be filled at a CDM for the client to take home with them?

For overnight services and for clinics that use a CDM in lieu of a dispensary, you can create a prescription request that will go to the CDM, retrieve the product from the machine, and print out the prescription label from the patient record without having to go through the pharmacy fill queue.

From the Prescription Request window, start by selecting Go-Home (Client Labeling) and Fill from CDM from the radio buttons at the top.

Fill out the rest of the prescription according to the DVM's instructions.    Then click on Add Script.  (Click on Send Approval Pending Notice if your prescribing DVM is working remotely.)

Once the Prescribing DVM has approved the prescription, it should become available at your Cubex, Pyxis, or Omnicell machine within a minute or two.

After the prescription has been dispensed from the CDM, you should see a record of the filled prescription under the Controlled Drug Machine Dispensing tab on the Patient Record.

There are two sections on this tab:  Prescriptions contain any product dispensed from a CDM that was filled as part of a prescription marked as CDM fill.  Controlled Drug Machine Records include any products dispensed from a CDM, not just prescriptions, that may need to have Go Home client labeling, such as e-collars, bandages, and over the counter products like shampoos and treats.

Click on the printer icon next to the product name to print the Go Home labeling for the product.

How do I create a prescription for a patient for In-Hospital use?

VetView supports the Patient Profile option on CDMs from Cubex.  This allows you to send Patient Orders to a machine, then withdraw multiple times against a single approved prescription, until all of the total quantity of products have been exhausted.

From the Prescription Request window, start by selecting In-Hospital Use (Administration Record) and then choose the correct pharmacy you will be withdrawing against.  Click on CDM Order (Patient Profile) to continue.

Select the product you will be dispensing from the CDM from the search box.

Enter in the instructions.  Enter in a Dose Quantity and the total number of Occurrences.  The Total Qty allowed will automatically calculate and cannot be changed.

Once the prescription is Approved, the Patient Profile will become available for fill at the CDM.

CDM Patient Profile orders become visible on the Patient Record on the episode for which they were drawn against. Charges will automatically be added to the patient's bill based on your CDM settings for the specific product.

To end the availability of the product on the Patient Profile on the CDM, click on the Stop button which appears to the left of the Date in the CDM section under Medication.

This will change the status of the prescription to Stopped, and no more of the product can be withdrawn from the CDM until a new prescription is created.

When all of the draws have been made against the prescription for the Patient Profile, the status will change to Filled.  At that point, a new prescription will need to be created.

Prescriptions issued from CDMs may require a Medication Administration Record if it is a controlled substance. Multi-draw prescriptions over a period of time may require a record for each draw from the CDM, depending on your state’s policies. Contact your pharmacy if you have questions about the specified requirements by your state’s DEA for MARs.
