Value List Setup Screen

The Value List Setup has been moved to its own screen in VetView 5.0. It is no longer available on Catalog Setup.

Access to this screen is controlled via a new privilege, Hospital Value List Setup, which is found under the Hospital Setup Data section in Hospital Roles.

Otherwise, the functionality of this screen is similar to how it was in version 4.2.3 of VetView when Value Lists were still under Catalog Setup.

Search Value Lists

Search for a value list by keyword in the top section. You can also filter by only Active or Inactive lists, or include both if you are not sure whether the list you are trying to find is Active or not.

Value Lists

After searching, the results of the search will display in the section named Value Lists. Each list name is how it will appear in other parts of the system that call on Value Lists, such as document elements or questions.

This image shows a detail of the screen with the Value Lists panel highlighted to show how the search results from the top portion of the screen will display once the Search button has been pressed. A list of all the matching search terms is output into the panel vertically.

Add/Edit New Value List

To create a new value list, click on the Add button. A small window will appear. This is also the window that appears when you click the Edit button.

You can change the name of a value list, or set it as inactive in the system. Inactive value lists will no longer be available to add to documents or requests on the Hospital catalog.

Delete / Merge Value List

If a value list is no longer needed because it was incorrectly being used as a means of forced Catalog setup on an old document that is not use any more, or there were duplicates in the system due to the import process, you can delete them or merge them together.

Select the list that is no longer needed, and click on the delete button to trigger the Delete/Merge process.

VetView will perform a series of checks to ensure that the value list is truly deprecated and can be removed without consequences.

If the list is not used anywhere, you will get a simple option to delete it.

If the list is in use elsewhere, you will get a warning and be prompted to replace it with another list, functioning as a form of merge.

This feature can be useful for cleaning out duplicates that were created as a result of years of imported data from older systems. Verify that the lists you want to delete can truly be replaced by one of the other existing lists, and then select that new list before clicking the Merge button.

In the background, the Value Lists will be swapped, and the existing Catalog Item (Result Master) will continue to function exactly as before, on all old and new documents.

In this example, there are multiple “Positive/Negative” value lists that can be combined together.

Housekeeping: If the Value List is not used anywhere, and it does not actually seem to be worth keeping, it is safe to delete it! If you need a similar list again in the future, you can always add it back.

Feel free to delete any unused lists to keep your Value List options cleaner and more limited.

Value List Items

The Value List is the name that appears in the drop down menus throughout VetView.

The Value List Items are the individual items within the list that can be selected.

Click on an existing Value List to see all the current Value List Items that are inside it.

Add/Edit Value List Items

Click on the Add button to add a new value list item to a list. A window will open that allows you to give a name to the value list item, and if you are using this list on a machine interface that requires it, a short code or standard code that can be used as a shortcut for the item.

Short Codes and Standard Codes are completely optional and can be safely left blank. You don’t need to add these unless you have a specific legacy machine that requires them; modern HL7 messages can accept the plain text value itself via the Job/Interface in VetView.

Move Items Up or Down

You can set a sort order on the value list that controls how it displays within the drop down menus on Documents, Requests, and other places in VetView.

This allows you to keep the most common values at the top of longer lists, or to have items sorted in a logical order.

Sort Item List

You can also automatically sort a long list item into alphabetical order.

Or, if you are satisfied with the current sort but want to make sure that the new sort numbers in the database are preserved, you can Maintain Current Order to lock them into place. (This also functions as a Save on the Value List Items order.)

Delete Value List Item

If a Value List Item is no longer needed, it can be deleted at any time.

If you accidentally delete a Value List Item that it turns out you needed, you can always add it back again.

As these results are saved and returned as text, this will not impact any historical documents or requests.

Value Modifier List

Modifiers are a means of adding rapid comma separated items to a text box that is hooked into a value list. For example, it can be used to build a quick list of types of items, or to differentiate strains of bacteria in a cell culture, resulting in a more streamline primarily list on the document.

Results on the Document or Request will output as a single item into the text box.

Add/Edit Value List Modifier

Click on the Add button to add a new Value List Modifier. This will open up a small window. Add the name of the new modifier, and a standard code if needed.

This will also be the same window that opens when you click the Edit button.

Move Items Up or Down

Like the main Value List items, you can sort the Value List Modifiers manually or automatically.

Manual sorts allow you to put the most common items at the top of the list.

Sort Value Modifier List

You can sort the value list items alphabetically, or set the current sorts by clicking on Maintain Current Order.

Delete Value Modifier

If a value list modifier was added incorrectly or will no longer be needed, it can be safely deleted.
