Prescriptions Tab

The Prescriptions Tab on the patient record includes an exhaustive history of all medications, prescriptions, and vaccines that the patient has record for in VetView.    Client Reported medication is also included under the Medication History tab.

Active Prescriptions

The Active Prescriptions tab displays all prescriptions that were filled and have an expiration date that has not yet passed.  These are sorted into four possible headers:  Requested and Waiting Approval,  Approved and Being Filled, Available Refills, and Unexpired and Active Prescriptions.  On this tab you can also Add New Rx, Edit Rx, and Approve Rx using the buttons on the top row.  You can also right click to access Copy Rx, Refill Rx, and Cancel Rx.  For External Fills, you can also reprint the prescription.

Requested and Waiting Approval

This section displays any prescriptions that students or staff have requested but have not yet been approved by the DVM the requested was sent to.

These prescriptions can be approved in bulk by checking the box next to the prescription lines, then clicking on the Approve Rx button at the top of the screen.  They can be reviewed individually by clicking on the Drug Name to open the full prescription, or reviewed in brief by mousing over the info dot next to the drug name.

Approved and Being Filled

This section displays all prescriptions that have been approved and sent to the Pharmacy but have not been filled.

When the status of the Prescription changes to In Process, this becomes visible on the info dot on the prescription.  (It will also show as In Process on the My Pending Prescriptions (Requested By) and My Pending Prescriptions (Prescribing DVM) widgets on the home page.)

Available Refills

If a Go Home prescription was issued with refills, and there are still refills available, they will display in this section of the screen.  PRN prescriptions will continue to be available for refills until the prescription itself expires.

To refill a prescription, click on the blue Rx button, or right click and choose Refill Rx from the menu.

You can also choose to cancel a prescription that has available refills, if the patient no longer needs to take that medication.

Refill Rx

Enter any comments, the patient status (if they are in the hospital), and any flags needed for the pharmacy queue.

Cancel Refills

For prescriptions with a set number of prescriptions, you may be prompted to cancel only the next refill, or the whole prescription going forward.

For PRN prescriptions, the only option is to cancel the entire prescription.

Unexpired and Active Prescriptions

This section displays any prescriptions that were issued and filled for the patient, but whose label expiration has not yet passed.  Depending on your state laws and the hospital settings, prescriptions can be active for up to one year after being issued.  (Some states may have a lower limit, such as six months.)

External Fill prescriptions, which were issued with the intent of being filled at another pharmacy location, can be printed from this screen if needed.  Click on the small printer icon net to the script name to open the prescription for printing. 

Copy Rx

For controlled substances that were not allowed to have refills, you can use the Copy Rx function to quickly recreate the original prescription and issue another one.   The standard Add Rx window will open, but it will be pre-loaded with the previous settings, and can be requested and approved again easily if nothing has changed.  This option is available on right click of any prescription.

Daily Fills

This subtab displays any prescriptions that were set up to use the Daily Fill workflow, for pharmacies that fill prescriptions overnight with the intent of taking them around to inpatients first thing in the morning.  This is separate from the CDM Orders (Patient Profile), which sends the prescription to a controlled drug machine to be filled throughout the day. 

This tab is divided into three sections:  Daily Fill Tomorrow, Daily Fill Today, and Complete History (of Daily Fills.)

Daily Fill Prescriptions - Tomorrow

This section shows all the active Daily Fill prescriptions that will be sent to the pharmacy to be filled overnight.  Daily Fill (Tomorrow) also has the option to cancel, either by clicking on the Ban icon next to the prescription, or by choosing Cancel Daily Fill from the right click menu of that prescription.

Daily Fill Prescriptions - Today

This section shows all the active Daily Fill prescriptions that were set to be filled today.

Complete History

This section displays all of the patient's past Daily Fill prescriptions.   When a Daily Fill prescription is cancelled, or the patient is discharged, the prescriptions will move to this section.

Control Drug Machine Dispensing

This tab shows all the products and prescriptions that were issued through a Controlled Drug Machine, via a CDM Fill or CDM Order (Patient Profile).  It sorts them into two sections:  Prescriptions, and other Control Drug Machine Records.

Prescriptions

This tab shows all prescriptions issued from a CDM.  CDM Fills that were completed will show as Filled Status.  CDM Orders will either show as Approved, Filled, or Stopped.  Stopped CDM Orders indicate that the full course of the approved prescription was not drawn from the CDM, for whatever reason.

  Control Drug Machine Records

These records display any non-prescription products that were issued for this patient from a controlled drug machine, such as bandages, syringes, catheters, kits, etc.    Any product that is sent from a machine to appear on the patient's bill will display in this section.

Vaccination History

This tab shows any product that was added to a patient's orders that was flagged to appear on the medical record as a Vaccine.  Non-prescription products can appear on this tab if they were set with that flag.  It also displays any Client Reported Medications that were indicated to be a vaccine, if you obtained a complete history of the patient.

Print Vaccine Record

This button will load a PDF version of this page listing all vaccines.    This report is separate from the Vaccine Certificate associated with individual vaccines that can act as proof of vaccination for international travel.

Clicking on Print Vaccine Record will load a small window with options.

After clicking on Print, a PDF will display with the selected options.

Complete History

This tab serves as the all-in-one version of the Prescription page, containing everything that was ever issued to the patient from within VetView.  This list can be printed and included in a patient's medical record, sent to RDVMs, or given to the owner for their own records of their pet's health.

Actions can be taken on the prescriptions on this page, such Copy Rx for older prescriptions that are no longer active, Approve Rx for prescriptions in Requested status, or cancelling a Daily Fill that is still ongoing by clicking on the ban sign next to it.

Medication History

This tab includes any Medication other than vaccines that was put on the patient's record, whether from the bill or from a Client Report for the medication.

This list can be printed to include in a patient's medical record, sent to RDVMs, or give to the owner.

Labels can be printed for medication issued during the episode, if needed.  No actions are available from right click on this page.

Vaccine Certificates can also be printed from this page when the medication type is a vaccine.
